Friday April 9—Sunday April 11 – annual BMS Music Marathon

The annual BMS Music Marathon raises funds for educational programs by students gathering donations March 1 through April 9. As the School celebrates year 70, it has a proven history preserving and advancing the art of music. New this year: on Saturday at 10 am, Otha Day leads a first-ever Drum Circle in the Taft Recital Hall (drums provided). Come and experience this in-the-moment hour of music making. On Sunday, at 3 pm, some more advanced BMS students will be performing concertos. This new Concerto Showcase allows students to explore the concerto repertoire, which offers a new set of challenges as a solo instrument performs with an orchestra (in our case, a pianist serving as the orchestra).

The Music Marathon takes place Saturday and Sunday, April 10 and 11, in the Taft Recital Hall. Students perform from 9 am to 6 pm to fulfill their pledges. The performances are free and open to the public. A bake sale and music shop take place during the weekend. Any student earning $100 or more in pledges will be invited to a fantastic ice cream party in June. Pledge packets can be picked up at the School starting March 1. Music Marathon is sponsored by Greylock Federal Credit Union.

Music Marathon will kick off with a Prelude Party Friday, April 9, 6 – 8 pm. Party goers will be treated to a Cabaret & Culinary Showcase. $40 per person. Call 413.442.1411 for reservations and information.

Murray began singing with Albany Pro Musica in 2001, and is their composer in residence. Last fall he won the Vaughan Williams Memorial Composition award with a choral piece titled “The Blueberry Lesson”. The text for “The Blueberry Lesson” was written by the late Arthur Phinney, a Pittsfield poet. Another of Murray’s choral pieces, “Margery Make the Tea,” won the grand prize in the Harmonia Choir Choral Composition Contest (Ottawa, Canada) in 2006.

Albany Pro Musica’s is the premier choral group in the Capital Region, with approximately 65 singers in its core group and as many as 150 singers in its expanded APMasterworks chorus. The group is known for itslarge-scale choral orchestral works as well as its exceptional mastery of more intimate a cappella works. David Griggs-Janower is founder and director of this 27 year old organization.

Albany Pro Musica has produced numerous recordings and was one of just 16 choirs selected from across the country to be included in the National Public Radio’s CD “Christmas Around the Country” released in 2005. Pro Musica’s performances have been aired many times on local and national public radio. The group has also toured in France, Spain, and Italy.
